Russell & the The Bay of Islands
New Zealand, World Destination

The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand’s most breathtakingly beautiful regions. World famous for its big game fishing, its pristine waters are home to an amazing array of fish and marine life. Yacht charters and cruises, deep-sea diving, swimming with dolphins, you name it – this water paradise has it all. There are actually 144 islands in ‘The Bay’, with hundreds of secluded beaches and coves for you to explore and enjoy.
Roberton Island, Bay of Islands

Even if you don’t want to get on the water, there really is something for everyone in the Bay of Islands. The area is steeped in history - New Zealand’s founding document, The Treaty of Waitangi, was signed here in 1840. Follow the heritage trail, visiting Waitangi and other historic sites, and learn about Maori culture and the ways of the early European settlers. Award winning wineries, first class restaurants and art galleries complete the picture, and they are both easily accessible and highly regarded.

No matter how you wish to while away your days, its semi-tropical temperatures, natural beauty and friendly atmosphere, make the Bay of Islands a perfect holiday destination.

RUSSELL

As soon as you arrive, you will notice Russell’s relaxed atmosphere, reminiscent of days gone by. In Russell it is easy to slip into ‘holiday mode’ and forget about the rest of the world. However, the quaint character of the village belies the busy marina, which serves as a base for world famous deep sea fishing regattas, competitions and charters. Russell is full of life – it’s a magical place to stay.
The Strand, Russell

Russell is the Bay of Islands’ most picturesque town. It is a quiet seaside village with unique heritage, being New Zealand’s first capital and the site where in 1845 Maori chief Hongi Heke cut down the British flagstaff as a sign of protest towards the European setters.

Flagstaff Lodge is just one minute’s walk to Russell's cafes, restaurants, and water front. An original family homestead, built at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Lodge has been carefully renovated and restored so that, today, it is one of The Bay of Islands' most exclusive boutique lodges.
